Literaturcafé mit Ines Godazgar

The Green Belt now stretches along the former inner-German border between Lower Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt, where barbed wire and border towers once restricted people's freedom. This former border area has now become an oasis for plants, animals and people.

But what was life like on and with the former German-German border? Author Ines Godazgar met with over 30 contemporary witnesses and recorded their stories in her book "Grenzschicksale" (Border Fates). The stories are captivating in their closeness: they are naturally often frightening, brutal or tragic, but at least as often moving, detailed and exciting, often even clever and wise.

The accounts show how strongly the division of Germany affected people's personal lives and work. But also how differently people dealt with this border, which was long considered unchangeable. The memories thus add up to a kaleidoscope of the fates on both sides of the Iron Curtain. They are intended to enrich the imagination of future generations of an era in German history that continues to have an impact to the present day.
