The Oker Reservoir is an attraction in the Harz Mountains and has the status of the largest reservoir in Lower Saxony due to its water surface area of around 2 square kilometres. The Oker reservoir is characterised by numerous branches and bays. The dam wall, which is 260 metres long and holds the water in the reservoir, is very impressive.

Important functions of the Oker dam are flood protection and power generation.

Being active in nature

The Oker reservoir and the surrounding area offer unique opportunities to get out and about in the fresh air and enjoy nature. If you love water sports, you've come to the right place! There is a wide range to choose from.

Sailing and surfing offer you fast-paced fun. If you are looking for peace and relaxation, fishing is the perfect activity. It is also possible to swim in the Oktertalsperre reservoir. A special highlight is diving, which is permitted under special conditions.

In cooler weather, the forest area around the Okertalsperre is ideal for hiking and cycling. Those who enjoy mountain biking will also find what they are looking for here. There are plenty of routes to ride down the mountains with vigour and enjoyment.

Exploring the Oker reservoir in the Harz Mountains

A boat trip on the "MS Aqua Marin", which takes around 90 minutes, is a great way to get to know the Oker reservoir. The boat calls at 4 piers, one of which is particularly attractive due to its proximity to the dam wall. The tour takes you through the wide bays with the wooded mountains in the background. Here you can relax and enjoy the fantastic views. The imposing dam wall of the Oker dam is a major attraction. You have the opportunity to find out exciting information about the wall on a guided tour.

Sunken places in the Oker reservoir

The Oker reservoir was completed in 1956. The villages of Unter- and Mittelschulenberg were located in the area that was to be flooded. The inhabitants were therefore relocated to the new village of Schulenberg, which is now a popular holiday resort for relaxation. If you want to get an impression of the flooded villages, you can experience this on a dive. Equipped with a torch, you can dive into the underwater world and discover the outlines of the houses.

Oker dam-gigantic and large

Nestled in the charming Harz landscape, the Oker dam is the largest in Lower Saxony. The sight of the imposing dam wall in particular leaves a lasting impression. This is a so-called curved gravity dam with a height of 67 metres. The water pressure is optimally distributed thanks to the curvature. On the one hand, the wall takes over the function and on the other, the pressure is distributed over both sides of the mountain.

Conclusion

The Harz Mountains are a popular holiday destination and have a lot to offer. The Oker dam is well worth a visit, idyllically situated in the midst of beautiful nature. There is a wide range of leisure activities on offer. There is something for everyone, be it water sports, hiking, mountain biking, experiencing a boat tour or simply exploring the entire region around the Oker Dam.
