Built in 1821 as a residential building, the Harz Museum building remained in private ownership until 1918 and then housed municipal authorities such as the police and building authorities. The museum has been housed on the upper floor since 1955.

Wernigerode's first museum was the "Fürst-Otto-Museum", which opened on 31 July 1897. It was closely intertwined with the Prince's estate and jeopardised by his bankruptcy.

Thanks to the commitment of the History and Museum Association, it was preserved as a museum of local history and was housed in the so-called tenant's house on the estate from 1931 to 1945. After the turmoil of war, it was reopened on 12 October 1946.

Afterwards, however, the collection was moved to the castle, whereby changes were made to the collection in the following years and losses occurred.

After extensive reconstruction and renovation work, the museum was reopened on 15 May 2001 with a new permanent exhibition. It is divided into two sections, one focussing more on the natural sciences and the other on the history of the town and the art of the Harz Mountains.
