Torfhaus

Torfhaus is located in the north-west of the Harz Mountains in Lower Saxony. With its location at 800 metres, it is the highest settlement in this federal state. Torfhaus is a small district of the municipality of Altenau-Schulenberg. The Torfhausmoor is located near the village. In the 16th century, attempts were made to extract peat from the moor, which led to the creation of the village.

Places of interest in Torfhaus

One of the visitor centres in the Harz Mountains is located in Torfhaus. Here you can visit an exhibition about the Harz Nature Park. In addition, the visitor centre is the ideal starting point for hikes such as the Goethe Trail or the Moorstieg.

In the footsteps of Goethe

You start at the Torfhaus National Park Visitor Centre and pass the Brockenfeldmoor and the former border strip on the way. But you can use the Goethe Trail not only as a hiker. Popular mountain bike and e-mountain bike routes also run partly along the Goethe Trail. There is also the possibility of ascending the Brocken.
