Places of interest in Clausthal-Zellerfeld
A visit to the Upper Harz Mining Museum should definitely be on the programme. The history of ore mining in the Harz Mountains is illustrated in an interesting way over four floors. Lead and zinc used to be mined in the Kaiser Wilhelm II and Ottiliae shafts. A glassworks also displays its work and showrooms between the mining museum and the local spa gardens. Here, visitors can experience the more than 200-year-old tradition of glass blowing in the Harz Mountains. There is also the GeoMuseum in the main building of Clausthal University of Technology. The Market Church of the Holy Spirit is also worth a look inside its baroque interior. It is the largest wooden church in Germany.
Other attractions in Clausthal-Zellerfeld
The Zellerfeld Münzbräu has been brewed in the brewing academy for over 500 years. Today, in the rooms of the former Zellerfeld mint, handmade beer is brewed with much love and experience, which can be tasted afterwards. There are even special beer seminars for groups.
The pannier and messenger women are also typical of the mining town in the Harz Mountains. They once transported loads of 40 kilograms and more on their backs in a woven wicker basket. They not only exchanged goods and information, but also supported the miners financially. On some of the routes, today's visitors have the opportunity to follow the former paths of the Kiepenfrauen.
Nature and recreation
Relaxation and recreation can be found in Clausthal-Zellerfeld's spa gardens. The impressive natural landscape of the Harz Mountains is practically on the doorstep for hikes and cycle tours. Nature is combined with cultural treasures, but the region's culinary specialities in the taverns and breweries are also waiting to be discovered. The classics include Harz braised sausage, Harz brown trout and Harz bread loaf soup.
