However, Blankenburg lost its importance as a residential town in the 19th century with the collapse of the Principality of Anhalt-Bernburg and fell into an economic crisis. In the 20th century, the town experienced a renewed upswing when numerous industrial companies were relocated to the region during World War II. After the war, however, the town once again fell into an economic crisis and it took until the 1980s for the town's situation to stabilise.
