The history of the town of Blankenburg in the Harz Mountains dates back to the Middle Ages. The town was founded in the 12th century by the Counts of Regenstein and was originally intended as a border castle between Saxony and Thuringia. Over the centuries, however, the town developed into an important residential town and was also the seat of the Princes of Anhalt-Bernburg, among others. Blankenburg was a residential town until the 19th century and numerous buildings were erected that are still among the town's sights today.
However, Blankenburg lost its importance as a royal seat in the 19th century with the collapse of the Principality of Anhalt-Bernburg and fell into an economic crisis. In the 20th century, the town experienced a renewed upswing when numerous industrial companies were relocated to the region during the Second World War.
After the war, however, the town fell into another economic crisis and it took until the 1980s for the town's situation to stabilise. In recent years, however, Blankenburg im Harz has once again become a popular holiday destination and the town is experiencing a new upswing. The historical sights, breathtaking scenery and relaxed atmosphere of the town make it a perfect place for a holiday.
