From Wernigerode to the Brocken via Schierke

Where should a cycle tour in the Harz Mountains lead to if not to the Brocken? This is another of our cycling tours that takes you up to the top of the mountain. From Wernigerode, the route leads towards Schierke and from there up to the Brocken. The route then descends on the western side for a short distance along the Brocken railway past the Wurmberg to Schierke. There are some sections of the route with steep inclines where you should push your bike for a short while.

The starting point in Wernigerode is the railway station, after which the route heads south for about 15 kilometres and 1.5 hours, more precisely in the direction of the town of Elend. Pass through Schierke and continue straight on towards the ascent to the Brocken. Once on the Brocken summit, a wonderful panoramic view in all directions awaits hikers and cyclists, depending on the weather. The attractions of the Brocken summit par excellence are the characteristic Brockenhaus and the well-known Brockenbahn with the Brocken railway station.

Unlike our previous cycle routes, which had the Brocken summit as their destination, we don't go down the same way, but west along the Brocken railway via en Goetheweg. Here you cycle directly next to the rails for a while and have the unique opportunity to observe and photograph the old HSB locomotives at close quarters. An experience for the whole family.

Further south-east, the route descends from the Brocken towards the small town of Elend. Cyclists can enjoy the western view of the Brocken in all its glory on this section. From Elend, the trail continues along a similar path back to Wernigerode, where the hike finally ends.
