Where should a cycle tour in the Harz mountains lead if not to the Brocken? This cycle tour also takes you up to the mountain peak. From Wernigerode, the route leads in the direction of Schierke and from there up to the Brocken. It then descends a short distance on the western side along the Brocken railway past the Wurmberg to Schierke. There are some sections of the route with very steep inclines where the bike should be pushed for a short time.
The starting point in Wernigerode is the railway station, after which the route heads south for around 15 kilometres and 1.5 hours, more precisely towards the town of Elend. The route continues straight on through Schierke towards the ascent to the Brocken. Once at the summit of the Brocken, hikers and cyclists can enjoy a wonderful panoramic view in all directions, depending on the weather. The Brocken summit's main attractions are the characteristic Brockenhaus and the well-known Brocken railway with the Brocken station.
Unlike our previous cycle routes, which had the Brocken summit as their destination, the route does not go down the same way, but westwards along the Brocken railway via the Goetheweg. Here you cycle right next to the tracks for a while, giving you the unique opportunity to observe and photograph the HSB's fantastic old locomotives up close. An experience for the whole family.
Further south-east, the route continues down from the Brocken towards the small town of Elend. Cyclists can enjoy the western view of the Brocken in all its splendour on this section. The route then follows a similar route from Elend back to Wernigerode, where the hike finally ends.
