The Harz region has a multitude of small and large waterfalls to offer, which attract tourists and hikers in equal measure. However, very few excursionists realise that many of the waterfalls were not created by natural processes. This also applies to the Spiegeltal Waterfall in the Harz Mountains. Originally, it was just a by-product of mining in the region. Today, the waterfall is one of the small highlights in this part of the Harz Mountains. What's more, the hike can be quite a challenge and is therefore also worthwhile for experienced hikers.

Origin of the Spiegeltal waterfall

The Spiegeltal waterfall shares its origins with many other waterfalls in the Harz region. As mining increased here and more and more collieries were built, the workers began to work the landscape according to their wishes. This served to simplify logistics, for example. The many small ponds in the region in particular could become an obstacle to the removal of trees or mining products. This was also the case around the Spiegeltal ponds.

The original intention was not to create a centre of attraction for hikers and tourists in the region. The creation of an artificial stream and a transport ditch - which unfortunately no longer exists today - was intended to facilitate the removal of tree trunks that were felled in this part of the Harz Mountains. The difference in height between the individual levels and the stream, which still exists today, created the Spiegeltal waterfall, making it a wonderful destination for hikes in modern times.

A man-made natural wonder at the Spiegeltal ponds

The waterfall can be reached via several paths. It is located directly on the Zellerfelder Kunstgraben and is therefore part of the water hiking trail, which is very popular with many visitors to the region. The easiest way to get there is via the hiking trail along the Spiegelbach stream. The Spiegeltal waterfall is a popular attraction in both summer and winter. The various small resting places around the waterfall provide the perfect opportunity to catch your breath and take in the spectacle. The waterfall is also a popular subject for photos from a variety of perspectives and is therefore very popular with many holidaymakers in the region.
