The Söse and the Sösetalsperre are characterised by lush mixed forests, rolling hills and a peaceful atmosphere. Whether as part of a long-distance hike such as the Harzer Baudensteig or as a day trip destination - at the picturesquely situated reservoir north-east of Osterode, you can come to rest at an altitude of 220 metres, enjoy the beauty of nature and take part in various outdoor activities.

Educational circular trail around the reservoir

The 38-kilometre-long mountain river Söse is dammed below the small village of Riefensbeek-Kamschlacken in the three-stage Söse dam. In addition to the large main dam, which covers 121 hectares, there is a small pre-dam and a post-dam. The dam wall is equipped with seating areas and is easily accessible by car. A 9.9-kilometre trail leads around the interesting barrier structure and the lake. During the tour, you can not only enjoy the view, but also learn something about the fauna: On the southern shore, you will find a beautifully designed fishing nature trail organised by the Osteroder Angelverein.

Fishing trip to the Sösetalsperre on medical certificate

The Sösetalsperre reservoir in the Harz Mountains is a highlight for anglers anyway. Although you have to obtain a health certificate in advance, as the towns and communities in the southern and western Harz foreland are supplied with drinking water from the Sösetalsperre and its network of pipes, you will be rewarded with low fishing pressure and the special drill. This is because the main barrier is rich in predatory fish, the catching of which represents an exciting challenge - pike and zander in particular are fished out of the water here, sometimes in considerable sizes. Fly fishing for trout is also permitted in the secondary barrier. However, boat fishing and other water sports activities such as swimming are not permitted.

Explore the Sösetalsperre on two wheels

The dam is not only suitable for walks and hikes or a fishing trip, but is also a good starting point for tours on two wheels. The winding roads around the lake and the paths into the surrounding Harz mountains are very popular with motorcyclists. For mountain bikers, there are numerous trails that lead through the wooded hills and valleys and range from easy to challenging routes. Of course, it is important to respect the environment and stay on designated trails so as not to damage the area's fragile ecosystem.
