The Upper Selke Valley is certainly one of the most beautiful nature reserves to be found in the Harz Mountains. One reason for this is the Selke Falls. The small waterfall, which at first glance looks as if nature has simply worked its wonders, was actually created by humans. The Selkefall itself is quite easy to reach via the B 185 federal road - there are car parks nearby. However, it is also a popular destination for general hikes through the Upper Selke Valley and invites you to take a short break.
Origin of the waterfall
Even if it may seem like it at first glance, the Selke Falls were by no means formed naturally. It is a remnant of the construction work for a pond that was necessary for the operation of the ironworks in Mägdesprung. Until a flood in 1955, water management facilities could still be seen here - but these were destroyed and what remained was the structure of today's Selke Falls. Despite its small size, it is considered one of the most beautiful waterfalls in the Harz Mountains, which is certainly due to the many steps the water takes on its way down.
The Selke Falls - an excursion destination or perfect for a break
The waterfall is the perfect destination both for a specific excursion and for a short break when hiking in the Upper Selke Valley. Connoisseurs of the area swear by the view in winter in particular. When parts of the water are frozen and only small streams fight their way down the four metres, the Selke Falls make for particularly beautiful photos. But the place is also popular with many hikers in summer for a short break. Benches on the banks of the waterfall allow hikers to take a break and provide a magnificent view.
There are various ways to reach the Selke Falls in the Harz Mountains. It can be reached via the main road 185 - it is easy to see from here and car parks nearby allow you to make a stopover - or via one of the many hiking trails that lead along the Selke. The waterfall is particularly popular as part of a hike starting from Alexisbad and continuing from here.
