Welcome to Herzberg Castle in the Harz Mountains! The widely ramified castle complex is nestled between the river Sieber and the Herzberg - Seesen railway line, not far from the centre of the town of Herzberg. The castle is enthroned above the town on the heights of the Hirschberg at an altitude of about 275 metres. You can reach the castle complex from the centre of Herzberg on foot in no time at all. Herzberg Castle in the Harz Mountains is also barrier-free. There is a car park for cars directly adjacent, and people with disabilities can be driven right into the castle courtyard.

The building is also known as the Welfenschloss (Guelph Castle), as the castle was inhabited by the Guelph noble family for several centuries. In fact, it last served as the residence of the Grubenhager line of the House of Brunswick-Lüneburg. Their descendant went down in history as George I (1660 - 1727), King of England. Herzberg Castle is therefore a historically valuable building.

Medieval Jewel from the Harz Mountains

The castle was first built in the 11th century. After a fire in 1510, Herzberg Castle had to be rebuilt, this time as a half-timbered structure. The half-timbered architecture, popular at the time, gives Herzberg Castle in the Harz Mountains its present appearance and is considered the trademark of the castle complex. Detailed ornamentation makes for a beautiful sight that you won't soon forget. Today's castle is a closed four-wing complex. While the southern wing is called the "Stammhausflügel", the eastern wing is called the "Grauer Flügel". The Sieber River, which gives the castle its name, flows along the Sieber Wing (north wing) and on the northwest side is the massive Marstall Wing. A clock tower is also integrated into the structure. Until the 18th century, Herzberg Castle in the Harz Mountains was occupied by its noble owners, and from 1852 the Herzberg District Court was established in the castle.

Culture at Herzberg Castle

The Guelph castle invites visitors to linger. There is a museum inside. Right at the beginning you are greeted by a faithful replica of Henry the Lion's Gospels. In addition to a model of the entire castle complex, the historical Guelph cradle from the 16th century shines above all in the exhibition. The museum in Herzberg Castle is dedicated to the history of the castle and the local forestry industry, but also focuses on the entire Harz region. Various special exhibitions are on offer for young and old. The museum is open all year round and admission prices are extremely low.

In addition, a cultural room has been created in the magnificent Knights' Hall, which regularly hosts a wide variety of events. Concerts, lectures or conferences take place here. You can even get married in the rooms of Herzberg Castle. The registry office is at your disposal in the Knights' Hall. Food and drink are also provided inside the castle. A small café-restaurant will provide you with cold and hot drinks and quick snacks as well as hot dishes to satisfy your hunger.

Herzberg Castle in the Harz Mountains is also worth a visit because it is located in the middle of a wooded area. Hikes and walks are a highlight, especially when the weather is nice. Not only for the inhabitants of the Harz, but also for every tourist, an autumnal walk through the forest is a source of joy.
