The impressive Radau waterfall is located on the B4 federal road between Torfhaus and Bad Harzburg. The water of the Radau Falls, which originates from a small mountain river near Torfhaus, plunges 22 metres over a steep rock face. The name "Radau" does not come from the roar of the rapidly falling water, as one might assume, but from a mountain river called "Radau" near Torfhaus, which feeds the waterfall. The water for the Radaufall is diverted from the Radau about 500 metres south-east of the waterfall, along which a hiking trail worth seeing leads to the uppermost part of the Radaufall. From there, you can observe at close quarters how the masses of water plunge into the depths at high speed. The nearby car park at Taternbruch is a good starting point for this short hike. There are also numerous hiking trails that lead to the waterfall and invite you to explore the surrounding area. Once you have reached the waterfall, for example, you can continue your hike to the Eckertalsperre dam, which is around three kilometres away.

Origin and accessibility of the Radau waterfall

The Radau waterfall was inaugurated in 1859 on the initiative of the Herzoglich-Braunschweigische Eisenbahngesellschaft after two years of preparation. The aim was to offer holidaymakers and spa guests an excursion and hiking destination worth seeing near Bad Harzburg in order to further promote tourism in the region. These efforts have paid off to this day, as the Radaufall is always well attended. Thanks in particular to the good transport links and the roadside car parks, it is always possible to pay a spontaneous visit to the Radaufall, even if you decide to leave at short notice. The man-made waterfall is also hard to miss from the main road in the direction of Bad Harzburg. And don't forget the forest restaurant right next to the Radau waterfall, where you can enjoy genuine Harz cuisine with a unique view of the waterfall.
