Similar to the Grenzklippe, Bärenklippe, Höllenklippe and Landmannklippe, the Leistenklippe is also part of the Hohnekamm, a long mountain range that stretches between Schierke, Drei Annen Hohne and Wernigerode. The Leistenklippe is located around three kilometres north-east of Schierke and, at around 901 metres above sea level, is considered the highest point of the Hohnekamm. Hikers on the hunt for the Harz hiking pin can collect another stamp here at stamp point number 15.
Ascent and view
The striking granite cliff can be climbed via an iron ladder, from the summit of which a unique view of the Brocken and the Wurmberg as far as Wernigerode, Halberstadt and Ilsenburg awaits. Only the view of the Brocken is slightly obstructed by the neighbouring border cliff. Thanks to the flat plateau on the summit, the view can be enjoyed from an almost completely flat terrace-like area. In suitable weather conditions, the Lower Harz Mountains with the Josephskreuz and the Großer Auerberg can be seen to the south-east. Due to its good views, the Leistenklippe was discovered and developed comparatively early and made accessible in 1898 by means of an iron ladder attached to the rock.
Like most of the other rock formations in the region, the Leistenklippe also shows the traces of weathering typical of granite rocks, in which erosion shapes the rocks more and more over time until they finally resemble wool sacks. The blocks of rock therefore look as if they have been carefully placed on top of each other.
Hike to the Leistenklippe
If you want to hike to the Leistenklippe, there are numerous starting points and paths. Popular starting points for a hike to the Hohnekamm cliff are Schierke and Drei Annen Hohne, although the route from Schierke is significantly shorter. From here it is just under three kilometres, with a total of 300 metres of altitude difference to overcome. However, a hike from Drei Annen Hohne railway station along the Glashüttenweg trail, which is around four kilometres long, is also highly recommended.
