The former bishop's town of Halberstadt in the Harz Mountains looks back on a long history: to this day, impressive churches and ornate half-timbered houses are reminders of the town's medieval past and invite you to explore.

Alongside the world heritage city of Quedlinburg and the equally famous half-timbered town of Wernigerode in the Harz, Halberstadt is considered one of the most beautiful towns in the north-east of the Harz foreland and is a versatile excursion or travel destination that is well worth discovering.

Among the most important sights in Halberstadt are the numerous large and small religious buildings. First and foremost, the St. Stephanus & Sixtus Cathedral can be recognised from afar: It shapes the silhouette of Halberstadt like no other building. Built in the Gothic style between 1239 and 1491, it is still a magnet for visitors from all over the world.

Visitors to Halberstadt Cathedral should also take time to view the extensive cathedral treasury, which includes many medieval treasures.

Close by are the Liebfrauenkirche (Church of Our Lady) and Martinikirche (St Martin's Church) - two other sacred buildings that have left a lasting mark on the cityscape for centuries.

The Martini Church is the town's landmark with its two towers of different heights.

Halberstadt also has a lot to offer culturally: various museums, cultural events or even the Nordharzer Städtebund theatre invite you to discover and enjoy yourself.

The Spiegelsberge Landscape Park is a green recreational area located to the south of the city, where both hiking and nature lovers get their money's worth.

Here visitors can see, among other things, an imposing hunting lodge built in the Renaissance style or visit various sports facilities. Those who wish can venture up the lookout tower, which offers a spectacular overview of the Northern Harz. Children, on the other hand, can visit the zoo with its large children's playground.
