The Hohnstein castle ruins in the Harz Mountains are a particularly worthwhile place to visit, as they combine two special features. On the one hand, the castle is located in the picturesque Harz Mountains, meaning that the area surrounding the castle is also worth a visit, while on the other hand, the castle itself is of enormous historical value. History lovers in particular will get their money's worth here.

The ancient history of the castle

The history of the Hohnstein castle ruins in the Harz Mountains can be traced back to the 12th century, when it was first mentioned in a document. Probably built in 1166 by Count von Regenstein, its purpose was to secure the territories in the Harz Mountains and protect trade routes. As a result, the castle ruins have a watchtower and high walls.

The castle's past can be described as extremely volatile until it fell into disrepair, as constant conflicts with neighbouring states and competitors meant that the castle regularly changed ownership. As a result, new additional buildings were frequently added, slowly increasing the size and strength of the castle. It was finally abandoned in the 16th century after a major fire during the Thirty Years' War and soon fell into oblivion.

The castle today

Today, in contrast to its past, the castle is no longer used for military purposes, but for purely touristic, historical and cultural purposes. Three parts of the castle ruins are the main reminders of its past. From the castle chapel, where songs were sung and prayers were said, to the knights' hall, where knights of various lords met and were sworn in, you can experience history up close here. In the old castle kitchen, on the other hand, you will encounter the more trivial aspects of the high and late Middle Ages. Here you can see the rooms where food was prepared for the nobility and their subjects.

Location and visit

Although the old castle ruins of Hohnstein can be reached by car, the route on foot is more recommended. Numerous hiking trails around and to the Hohnstein castle ruins invite you to come into contact with the nature of the Harz Mountains on the way to your destination.

The opening hours of the castle change from time to time, but there is a fixed opening period. You can visit the Hohenstein castle ruins between April and October. As the ruins are open and clearly laid out, a visit without a guide is not only possible but also recommended.

Take the stairs up to the ruined tower, from where you have a marvellous view of the Kyffhäuser mountain. The Burggasthof restaurant will help you satisfy your hunger in the Hohnstein castle ruins. In addition to the historical atmosphere of the castle ruins, the regional cuisine also allows you to immerse yourself in the culinary delights of the Harz Mountains. The small town of Nordhausen is also just a few kilometres away, where you can find accommodation and everyday products.
