The town of Nordhausen is not short of special features: first mentioned over a thousand years ago, it is located in the Thuringian part of the Harz Mountains, which mainly extends to the federal states of Saxony-Anhalt and Lower Saxony. Nordhausen is worth more than just a short visit during a holiday in the Harz Mountains.

The Roland

The landmark of the town of Nordhausen is the Roland. Since 1411, the wooden statue has symbolised freedom, power and jurisdiction. In his honour, the people of Nordhausen celebrate the annual Roland Festival, which attracts numerous visitors.

Art and culture in Nordhausen

The Flohburg, the IFA Museum and other museums provide an insight into the history of the town of Nordhausen. The art nouveau villa Kunsthaus Meyenburg hosts special exhibitions as well as concerts and other cultural events. The town's churches are also witnesses of the times. The best known is St Blasii with its beautiful and art-historically valuable vicarage.

Nordhausen grain and tobacco store

Distilling schnapps has been a tradition in Nordhausen since 1507. You can explore this during your holiday in Nordhausen at the traditional distillery Echter Nordhäuser. The town is also famous for another intoxicant: tobacco. However, the Tabakspeicher museum reveals much more about the history and former inhabitants of Nordhausen than its name suggests.

Harz narrow-gauge railway and tramway

The route of the famous Harz narrow-gauge railway starts at the station in Nordhausen and runs via other towns up to the Brocken. But it's not just the narrow-gauge railway that invites visitors to Nordhausen to take a ride - Nordhausen has one of the smallest tram networks in Germany. Line 10 takes you to the edge of the Harz Mountains.

Nordhausen for families

The area on the Petersberg offers everything a child's heart desires: from a large playground and supervised climbing sessions on a 20 metre high tower to a park to let off steam and relax. A visit to the animal enclosures in the city park is also a great idea.
