Harzspots holiday planner
As one of the region's biggest tourist attractions, the Harzer Schmalspurbahnen GmbH (HSB) operates a unique network of routes. Primarily operated by steam locomotives, the network has a total length of 140.4 km and a gauge of 1000 mm and opens up the rugged mountain world between the corner points of Wernigerode, Quedlinburg, Nordhausen and the Brocken.
The varied and interesting fleet includes numerous steam locomotives as well as historic and modern diesel vehicles. With our historic trains, we carry over 1 million passengers every year on the routes of the Harzquer, Selketal and Brocken Railway. From Wernigerode, the train travels several times a day at a leisurely pace uphill towards the Brocken - at 1,142 m, northern Germany's highest peak. On a clear day, you can enjoy a fantastic view from up here as far as the foothills. The World Heritage town of Quedlinburg is the perfect starting point for an unforgettable ride through the romantic Selke Valley, and from Nordhausen in Thuringia you travel along the north-south axis of the Harz, past all the beauties of this low mountain range.
In addition to the daily train service, we offer an extensive and varied range of tourist attractions. Our nostalgic traditional train is usually pulled by our over 100-year-old Mallet locomotives and runs to the Brocken several times a month on selected dates.
Climb aboard our historic carriages and experience your journey into the past.
But our themed special trains also offer you varied journeys on all routes throughout the year with many inclusive services. Or were you thinking of something out of the ordinary? Then why not hire your own personal special train! We will work with you to create your very own individual steam train journey, with exclusive additional services if you wish.
Experience pure steam pleasure in the heart of Germany - the Harz mountains with its Harz narrow-gauge railways.
