Katharina Trabert invites you on an extraordinary journey through Germany. On 20 May 2026 at 7.30 pm in the Remise of the Kunstverein, she will report on her unique hike along the former German-German border in a lecture entitled "Through Germany on foot: Katharina Trabert's search for cohesion" with pictures and stories.
The so-called Green Belt stretches over 1,400 kilometres from the Czech border to the Baltic Sea and is the largest nature reserve in Germany. With only the bare essentials in her luggage and an important question - "What holds us together as a society?" - the artist set off on a two-and-a-half-month hike in the summer of 2023. Along the way, she posed this question to everyone she met: people of different ages, social status, beliefs and experiences. Her journey took her through remote areas where grocery shops and inns have long since disappeared. There she asked for shelter and food with a song. Her encounters and conversations, which were characterised by hospitality, trust and openness, are the core of the lecture.
"I wanted to know what moves people and what connects them," says Katharina Trabert. "What I experienced on my trip was a mixture of worry, hope and, above all, the desire for more connection. The answers I found - both in words and in actions - showed that everyone cares about solidarity. That gave me hope for us as a society."
The lecture is not only a visual and narrative travelogue, but also an invitation to think about the values of community and cohesion and to reflect on one's own role in it. Katharina Trabert shows that despite all our differences, we are all united by the desire to live well together.
Katharina Trabert studied cultural studies, theatre and art in Germany, England and Italy. She has been working with various independent performance groups since 2003. Her real name is Katharina Kastendieck and she has been working in management and consultancy roles since 2005. She has been working for the University of Göttingen since 2014. Trabert works in various artistic disciplines - performance, music, theatre, action art and illustration. In summer 2023, she realised the project "Das Band", a 1,400-long hike in search of what connects us as human beings.
