The joint municipality of Hattorf am Harz was founded in 1972 in the district of Osterode, just a few kilometres west of the town of Herzberg am Harz on the southern edge of the Harz Mountains. Since the merger of the districts of Göttingen and Osterode on 1 November 2016, it has been located in the district of Göttingen in Lower Saxony. The joint municipality comprises four municipalities and is home to a total of 7,138 inhabitants (as of December 2023) on an area of around 57.48 square kilometres. The administrative centre is the municipality of Hattorf am Harz in the centre of the member municipalities, which was first mentioned in a document in 952 and is now a state-approved resort.
The centre of the administrative municipality, with its many nooks and alleyways, is characterised by half-timbered houses that have been preserved and partially restored to this day, as well as the church tower, which served as the defence tower of an old castle complex in medieval times. The location in the middle of the charming landscape surrounded by meadows and forests, combined with a number of leisure facilities such as the outdoor pool, a gliding airfield and a riding centre, make Hattorf am Harz an ideal place to relax and enjoy a holiday.
Leisure activities in and around the joint municipality
The landscape in and around the joint municipality with its extensive meadows, fields and forests is ideal for walks, hikes and cycle tours of all levels of difficulty. The area surrounding the Hattorf Oderparksee lake, which is located in the administrative municipality, is a particularly popular destination for hikers and cyclists. The lake itself is ideal for rowing or swimming, and anglers can also pursue their hobby in the designated rest areas. The area can also be admired from above by aeroplane. At the "Aue" airfield, adventure-seekers can fly over the landscape in a glider.
Those interested in the history of the municipality should not miss the Wilhelm Busch memorial behind the church and the Meierhof village museum. Here, the rural and farming life of earlier times is preserved and brought to life digitally. A 3D tour and multimedia exhibits give you a comprehensive insight into the history of the village. Hattorf am Harz also has a lot to offer in terms of leisure activities. From a heated outdoor pool, a bowling alley and a miniature golf course to the nearby tennis centre, the municipality offers a wide range of leisure activities. The member municipality of Wulften am Harz, on the other hand, is ideal for a trip with children to the pony farm on Birkenberg and the riding stables in the centre of the village.
