The town of Herzberg am Harz is located in the south of Lower Saxony and is home to around 14,000 inhabitants. It is situated in an idyllic location directly adjacent to the Harz National Park and is therefore a true mecca for hiking and nature lovers. In the centre of the national park are the districts of Herzberg Lonau and Sieber, which are named after the two rivers that run through the town. Both have their source in the imposing low mountain range of the Harz Mountains. Other districts are Pöhlde and Scharzfeld.

The town was first mentioned in a document in 1337 - but the oldest settlement in Herzberg is probably much older and must have originated around the time of the castle, which is the town's landmark. Herzberg quickly developed into an economic centre of the region and was considered an important place for linen and cloth makers, especially in the 18th century. Herzberg am Harz only received its town charter in 1929, although it already had an urban character centuries ago.

Those who love culture will certainly get their money's worth when visiting the historic town centre of Herzberg: colourful half-timbered buildings line the streets here, while narrow alleyways invite you to stroll and discover. There are craft shops, small cafés and much more to explore here. Visitors will also find several impressive places of worship within the city limits. Those interested in culture should not miss the impressive Guelph Castle, which is located on the Schlossberg and was built in the Renaissance style - especially as it offers a magnificent view over the surrounding countryside and the Harz Mountains when the weather is fine.

If you want to enjoy outdoor sports, you can swim, fish or dive in the beautiful Juessee lake in the centre of the city. With its surrounding park, it is Herzberg's green lung, inviting you to relax and unwind. The surrounding area with the Harz National Park invites you to go on long hiking or cycling tours with the whole family, and in the winter months the Harz also offers excellent conditions for winter sports such as snowboarding or skiing.

Fancy an unusual photo opportunity? Then it's worth visiting the Rhumequelle spring nearby, which offers spectacular views in summer and winter.
