The former episcopal town of Halberstadt in the Harz Mountains looks back on a long history: to this day, impressive churches and ornate half-timbered houses are reminders of the town's medieval past and invite you to explore.
Alongside the World Heritage town of Quedlinburg and the equally famous half-timbered town of Wernigerode in the Harz Mountains, Halberstadt is considered one of the most beautiful towns in the north-east of the Harz foreland and is a versatile excursion or travel destination that is well worth discovering.
Among the most important sights in Halberstadt are the numerous large and small religious buildings. Above all, the Cathedral of St Stephanus & Sixtus can be recognised from afar: It characterises the skyline of Halberstadt like no other building. Built in the Gothic style between 1239 and 1491, it is still a magnet for visitors from all over the world.
Anyone visiting Halberstadt Cathedral should also take the time to view the extensive cathedral treasury, which includes many medieval treasures.
Close by are the Liebfrauenkirche and Martinikirche - two other sacred buildings that have characterised the cityscape for centuries.
St Martin's Church is the town's landmark with its two towers of different heights.
Halberstadt also has a lot to offer culturally: various museums, cultural events and the Nordharzer Städtebundtheater invite you to discover and have a good time.
The Spiegelsberge Landscape Park is a green recreational area located to the south of the city and is perfect for hiking and nature lovers.
Among other things, visitors can visit an impressive hunting lodge built in the Renaissance style or various sports facilities. Those who wish can venture up the observation tower, which offers a spectacular view of the northern Harz Mountains. Children, on the other hand, can visit the zoo with its large children's playground.
