The town of Bad Harzburg is located in the south-east of the district of Goslar in the north of Lower Saxony. It is one of the oldest health resorts in Germany and lies at the foot of the Harz Mountains. The town was first mentioned in a document in 968 and was an important mining town in the Middle Ages. In the 19th century, Bad Harzburg became a popular health resort and has been a tourist attraction ever since. Covering an area of just under 21 square kilometres, the town is home to around 22,000 inhabitants, making it the largest town in the district of Goslar. The next largest cities are Braunschweig, around 80 kilometres away, and Hanover, around 100 kilometres away. Tourists and holidaymakers from the neighbouring federal states in particular, but also from the rest of Germany and Europe, visit the town year after year.

The castle ruins were built in the 12th century and was the residence of the Count of Lüneburg. Also worth a visit is Bündheim Castle, which was built in the 18th century and is now a museum housing the collection of the Duke of Brunswick-Lüneburg. Another of the town's flagship attractions is the well-known treetop path, which runs as a hiking trail over the tops of the trees and offers a breathtaking view of the town and the surrounding area.

The history of Bad Harzburg begins in the early Middle Ages. The first documentary mention of the town dates back to 968. Bad Harzburg was elevated to the status of a town in the year 1000. The town belonged to the Principality of Brunswick-Lüneburg and was the residence of the Count of Lüneburg. In 1432, the County of Lüneburg was conquered by Duke Ernst the Confessor and Bad Harzburg fell to Duke Ernst. In the following centuries, Bad Harzburg was the residence town of the Dukes of Brunswick-Lüneburg. Since the 19th century, Bad Harzburg has been a spa and bathing resort and attracts countless tourists and holidaymakers year after year.
