Among the many small waterfalls in the Harz Mountains, the Zorg Waterfall still enjoys the status of an insider tip. In recent years, it has become a favourite photo motif for many hikers and offers an impressive sight in both summer and winter. The Zorg waterfall is by no means the result of natural developments in nature, but is a by-product of industry, which was particularly prevalent here in the 19th century.

The insider tip of Zorg waterfall in the Harz Mountains

The waterfall is located around two kilometres north of Zorge. Its history is closely linked to the Steinbach river, which flows through this region. It is not simply a random spectacle of nature, as is the case with many other waterfalls. In fact, its formation is due to mining, which began here in the region in the middle of the 18th century. In order to operate the local Zorg smelter, it was necessary for the Steinbach to be partially dammed - this resulted in the New Pond, which still exists today.

From the New Pond, the water plunges into a flood in the east, which in turn feeds the waterfall. It has been a natural spectacle since 1780, but for years only very few people really knew about it. Due to its comparatively remote location - despite its proximity to Zorge - the destination has only become an insider tip for hikers and amateur photographers in recent years.

Beautiful nature in summer and winter

Many hikers appreciate a visit to the Zorge waterfall above all for its tranquillity. It is located somewhat off the beaten track and it is not uncommon to find yourself completely alone with the impressive sight of the waterfall during a hike. Yet it is actually easy to reach: From the New Pond near Zorge, it is only a few minutes along a small hiking trail before you reach the waterfall. A visit is worthwhile in both summer and winter. While the play of the water is a welcome way to cool off during the hike in summer, the Zorge waterfall often freezes over in winter, creating an even more impressive sight.
