The Daneilshöhle cave in the Huy mountain range, near Röderhof to be precise, is one of the most popular excursion destinations in the Harz region. It is not only popular because of its easily accessible location and the many other hiking options nearby. It is also about the stories and folklore associated with this supposed robbers' cave. The Daneilshöhle also offers the perfect resting place during other hikes in the area.

Favourite resting place and former robbers' den

How Daneil's Cave got its name is only known today from stories. It is said to have been a robber called Daneil who was up to mischief in the area and used the natural cave as his hideout. Of course, nobody can say for sure whether this was just a legend or whether it actually happened. What is certain, however, is that traces in the cave indicate that the naturally formed cave was used several times and probably even enlarged. Over the centuries, it was probably used by hermits and possibly also by robbers who were looking for a good hiding place and protection from the weather.

The cave itself consists of three rooms and has a total area of just under 50 square metres. Two of the rooms can be entered through an external entrance, while the third room has a large opening in the ceiling through which light can enter the cave. The various human constructions in the cave can no longer be precisely dated, but indicate that the cave has been inhabited several times and by different people over the centuries.

Perfect stopover for the hike

Anyone wishing to visit the cave, which was formed by melting glaciers, can do so at any time. It is freely accessible and therefore a popular destination for hikers in the area. It can be found within a few minutes from Röderhof - the cave is signposted on most hiking trails here. However, it is particularly suitable as a short hike during a visit to Huysburg Abbey. There is also a large open field in front of the cave, which is ideal for a picnic or a short stopover.
