Climatic features of the Harz

The climatic conditions in the Harz differ depending on the altitude. In the Upper Harz, especially in the higher regions, the climate is harsh, with average annual temperatures between 5 °C and 6 °C. The annual precipitation here is between 1,000 mm and 1,400 mm, and as much as 1,800 mm in the summit areas – a large proportion of which falls as snow. The Brocken, the highest mountain in the Harz, has an average annual temperature of around 3.5 °C and is shrouded in fog for around 300 days a year.

In contrast, the Unterharz lies in the rain shadow of the Brocken and therefore has a milder and drier climate. Temperatures here are only about 1°C to 2°C lower than in the Harz foreland, and the annual precipitation decreases towards the east to up to 650 mm.
