The town of Thale is located in the southern Harz Mountains in Saxony-Anhalt and lies at an altitude of 156 metres above sea level on the so-called Bodetalbalkon, on the edge of the Upper Harz Mountains. The name Thale is probably derived from the Old Saxon word for valley (thal = valley). The town's most famous sights include the Hexentanzplatz theatre, the Bode Valley with the Bode Lake Castle and the Rosstrappe. Thale is a town that has something for everyone and is so attractive precisely because of its diversity. Whether you want to enjoy nature and the idyllic landscape, take part in sporting activities or explore the town's sights - everything is possible in Thale. The town also has plenty to offer culturally, with numerous festivals and events throughout the year. Every year in June, Thale hosts the Mountain Festival, where numerous national and international artists perform on the open-air stage at Hexentanzplatz. The summer toboggan run, which opened in 2009, is also worth a visit.

Thale is an attractive town with many sights and leisure activities that are ideal for a relaxing and varied holiday in the Harz Mountains. Thale is an ideal starting point, especially for holidaymakers and tourists who enjoy nature and hiking. However, Thale is not only an ideal starting point for hikes and walks, mountain bike tours also lead from here through the entire Harz Mountains. Thale also offers numerous shopping facilities, restaurants, hotels and guesthouses that cater to the needs of holidaymakers and tourists. Both regional and international dishes can be enjoyed in the numerous pubs and restaurants. The nightlife in Thale also has a lot to offer, with bars, pubs and clubs inviting you to linger.

As mentioned at the beginning, the Hexentanzplatz Theatre, which is an open-air theatre with various performances every year, is well worth a visit. The theatre has space for up to 1,500 spectators and offers excellent acoustics. You should also not miss the summer toboggan run, which is approx. 1.5 km long and has a height difference of 170 metres. It is the longest toboggan run in the Harz Mountains and offers breathtaking views of the valley. It was opened in 2009 and has been one of the region's most popular attractions ever since.

The Königstein of the Teufelsmauer, located near Thale, is also particularly worth seeing and is considered one of the most popular attractions and is therefore visited by thousands of tourists every year. The Königstein is a castle stable on a mountain plateau and offers a fantastic view of the valley and the surrounding landscape. The "Rosstrappe" rock massif, which is located around 10 kilometres south of Thale, offers an equally impressive view. It is known for the traces of horses that were immortalised in the rock around 250 million years ago and is visited by around 200,000 people every year. Another highlight is the Bode Valley with the Bode-Seeschlösschen, which is located in a breathtaking landscape and is worth a visit in both summer and winter. In summer you can go hiking here and in winter the Bode Valley offers ideal conditions for winter sports enthusiasts, as many of the pistes and cross-country ski trails are well prepared.

Thale was first mentioned in documents in the 12th century and has belonged to the Duchy of Braunschweig-Lüneburg since the 16th century. Since the Reformation in the 16th century, Thale was a pious town and remained so until the time of the Thirty Years' War (1618-1648). In the Middle Ages, Thale was an important trading centre at the crossroads of two trade routes and had a large market square. During the Thirty Years' War, Thale was besieged by the Swedes and so badly damaged that only around a third of the population lived in the town afterwards. There were several fires in the following years, which further weakened Thale. From 1806 to 1813, Thale belonged to the Kingdom of Westphalia and then became part of the Duchy of Brunswick-Lüneburg again. Since 1922, Thale has been a town in the district of Harz in the federal state of Saxony-Anhalt.

In the years that followed, Thale was able to recover and developed into a popular holiday resort. Since the 19th century, Thale has also been a centre of German tourism for hikers and nature lovers and offers its visitors a variety of sights and leisure activities.
