The beautiful town of Osterwieck is located on the beautiful River Ilse, a tributary of the River Oker and on the southern slope of the Großer Fallstein. With a population of around 11,000, including all member municipalities, Osterwieck is a picturesque small town with many historic buildings and a rustic atmosphere.
Where is Osterwieck located?
Osterwieck is located in the federal state of Saxony-Anhalt, a short distance north of the Harz National Park. The small river Ilse, which flows into the Oker, flows through the town. The next largest towns in the neighbourhood are Bad Harzburg, Goslar and Halberstadt.
What makes the town special? What are the sights?
Apart from the beautiful surroundings of the Harz Nature Park, Osterwieck has a historic old town centre in which several buildings from the Middle Ages still stand. The oldest building is today's local history museum, which was first mentioned in writing in 1265 and extended in the 15th century. Here you can marvel at many informative facts about the town's history and prehistoric artefacts are also on display.
Also worth a visit are the Bismarck Tower, a defence tower built in 1904, which is now used as an observation tower, and the peaceful Eastern Cemetery, where mainly religiously persecuted people from the Second World War were laid to rest, as well as three old churches, which are an enriching place to visit for those interested in architecture.
In any case, you should not miss the castles in the city and the surrounding countryside. These include the Bunte Hof, of which only the south wing from the late 16th century remains today, the historic Hessen Castle and the late medieval Zilly Castle complex.
What can you do in the city?
Apart from visiting the museum and historical buildings, you can enjoy a good meal at the Brauner Hirsch restaurant. In summer, there is a small outdoor pool to cool off in. And the Harz hiking paradise is of course also in the immediate vicinity.
