The town of Oberharz am Brocken was created in January 2001 through the merger of the town of Elbingerode with the municipalities of the Brocken-Hochharz administrative community, which includes the towns of Benneckenstein, Elbingerode, Elend, Hasselfelde, Königshütte, Neuwerk, Höhlenort Rübeland, Rotacker, Sorge, Stiege, Susenburg, Tanne and Trautenstein. With numerous forests, a fascinating mountain world and dams and landscapes worth seeing, each of the 13 districts has its own unique selling point to discover.
Highlights worth seeing in the region
If you want to spend your holiday in northern Germany's highest low mountain range, you will certainly not be bored.
Numerous excursion destinations are waiting to be discovered by you. In the Oberharz am Brocken in particular, you can look forward to some of the most famous sights and attractions. From interesting museums and unique experiences to breathtaking views, there is something to suit everyone's taste. One of the top attractions in the region is the well-known "Harzdrenalin", located directly at the Rappbodetalsperre dam. Adrenaline junkies in particular can look forward to a variety of adventures here, from a 120-metre flight along the Megazipline to a spectacular pendulum jump from the Titan RT suspension bridge. If that's not enough for you, you can run down the wall of the observation tower or be catapulted 38 metres into the air by the so-called "Ultrashot", a human catapult.
On the other hand, you can take a more relaxed approach with a panoramic walk at a dizzying height across the Titan RT suspension bridge, which is the longest suspension bridge of its kind at 458 metres.
The stalactite caves of Baumann's and Hermann's Caves are also particularly worth a visit. As the oldest known natural show caves, they can be explored every 20 minutes as part of a group tour. Even far away from the villages, nature has a lot to offer with fresh mountain air, marvellous silence and almost endless expanses. Away from many overcrowded hiking trails, the Oberharz am Brocken has developed over time into a kind of insider tip among hiking enthusiasts.
