Elbingerode is a tranquil town in the Upper Harz Mountains and looks back on a long and traditional mining history. Surrounded by unspoilt nature, this town is also becoming increasingly popular as a recreational area.
A town with history
Elbingerode was probably founded between the 12th and 13th centuries under the name Alvelingeroth. For a long time, the area was characterised by mining and metallurgical history. You can still actively follow the traces of this period today - for example on the "Montangeschichtlichen Rundwanderweg durch das Bodfeld" (circular mining history trail through the Bodfeld) or on guided tours of the Büchenberg show mine.
Active or relaxing holidays for every taste
Due to its peaceful location and diverse nature, Elbingerode is a place for both relaxing and active holidays. The location at 450 to 480 metres above sea level ensures a pleasant low mountain climate and has helped the town to become a recognised resort. Whether you want to hike, cycle or simply enjoy the unspoilt nature - this is the place for you. Many of the hiking and cycling trails are themed and lead through the most beautiful corners of the Oberharz. In summer, the natural swimming pool with refreshing natural spring water awaits you. In winter, you will find cross-country ski trails and toboggan runs for fun in the snow. Amateur geologists will find the underground of reef limestone and volcanic rocks particularly exciting. This diverse place has a wide range of activities for every taste and every season.
An idyllic town with plenty to offer
Although Elbingerode is not a large town, it is teeming with leisure activities. In addition to the splendour of nature, you will find numerous historical sights and exhibitions in the immediate vicinity. The convenient location is also ideal for excursions and round trips through the Harz Mountains. Explore the Bode Valley or the nearby "colourful town" of Wernigerode! Elbingerode is also home to the annual Hexenwerk festival, which mainly plays house and techno music.
