The historic residential and cultural town of Ballenstedt is located in the Harz district and is home to around 9,000 inhabitants in an area of around 45 square kilometres, making it a quiet yet lively place that is known in many places for its impressive castle. First mentioned in the 11th century, the town played an important role in the Middle Ages and is now known as the "cradle of Anhalt" due to its historical connection to the Ascanian dynasty. The impressive Ballenstedt Castle in particular, whose illustrious past can be experienced up close in the historic rooms, attracts many visitors.
Thanks to its favourable location in terms of landscape and climate, the well-developed network of cycle paths and hiking trails as well as numerous leisure activities and accommodation options, the town of Ballenstedt has officially held the title of "state-recognised resort" since 2010. Anyone who comes here will discover history, nature and culture in their most beautiful diversity.
Ballenstedt Castle is undoubtedly one of the highlights of this small town in the Harz Mountains, which is not only architecturally impressive but also a major cultural attraction for visitors. The castle itself houses a museum that brings the history of the region and the former aristocratic family to life. The castle church also attracts visitors thanks to its magnificent interior and historic organ. The carefully designed castle park with its many paths and plants is ideal for a relaxing stroll around the castle.
In addition, the castle avenue and the castle theatre, one of the oldest preserved theatre buildings in Germany, are just some of the many other attractions and sights of great recreational value. Oberhof, located in what is now the southern part of Ballenstedt's old town, and Roseburg Castle, which is situated between Ballenstedt and the village of Riede and is also known as a fairytale castle due to its many decorative details, are also well worth a visit. The Old Town Hall and various churches also bear witness to Ballenstedt's long history and invite you to take a journey of discovery into the past.
Thanks to its location in the Harz Mountains, Ballenstedt is the perfect starting point for nature lovers and active holidaymakers. For hiking enthusiasts, the Selketal-Stieg, a long-distance hiking trail that runs partly through Ballenstedt, offers a wonderful opportunity to explore the natural beauty of the Harz Mountains. Whether hiking through the Harz landscape, visiting the castle or enjoying a concert in the castle church - Ballenstedt has something for everyone and offers ideal conditions for an unforgettable stay in the Harz.
