North of Bad Grund near the main road 242, the Hübichenstein rises about 50 metres into the air as a striking sight in the Harz Mountains. The rock is a natural monument in the Harz and popular with visitors. The steeply rising limestone rock consists of two aesthetically connected rock outcrops. These are a geological remnant from the Devonian period. More precisely, it is the remnant of a coral reef, which can be assigned to the limestone stock of the nearby Iberg.

On the trail of history in the Harz region

The surroundings of the Hübichenstein are also impressive. Various caves and pits indicate the former mining activity around the limestone rock. If you set out on the hiking trail around the rock, you can also discover a lot in the surrounding Harz region. Those interested should note that the area around the Hübichenstein is under special protection. Unfortunately, climbing on the high rock is prohibited. Incidentally, the rock is not only significant in terms of geological history, but also in more recent history. A monument to Kaiser Wilhelm I was erected here in 1987. A larger-than-life bronze eagle was placed on the top of the higher rock. With its three-metre wingspan, it makes quite an impression on onlookers. But this was not the only monument in honour of the emperor. There was another one in the lower area. This was an approximately two-metre-high portrait of Emperor Wilhelm I. Unfortunately, however, it was destroyed during the First World War. However, the eagle at the top of the high rock can still be admired today as a striking landmark.

The Hübichenstein for hikers and explorers

Most guests planning a holiday in the Harz Mountains want to go hiking. And this is more rewarding in the Harz than almost anywhere else. Hikers have the opportunity to enjoy wonderful and breathtaking nature around the Hübichenstein. Although the area around the high rock is protected and may not be climbed, the small rock needle can be walked on. It offers its guests and hikers a wonderful and natural route. On this route around the rock needle, ore remains can be discovered as well as the impressive impsonite, which indicates the presence of mineral oil. In addition, the trail leads over a wonderful vantage point to the town of Bad Grund.

The Felsenbühne - for fans of legends, myths and witches

Legends and mythical history are also reflected at the Hübichenstein. Every year on the first of May, the small stage at the foot of the Hübichenstein is transformed into a spectacular rock stage for fans of witches and Walpurgis Night. In earlier times, the dwarf king Hübich, who was an invariably friendly and kind king, is said to have once lived under the rock. He even helped people in need and gave them gifts. However, no one was allowed to dare climb his Hübichenstein. Anyone who did so would suffer the wrath of the dwarf king. According to legend, the dwarf king Hübich would rule over the rock as long as the Great Hübich Stone was higher than the Small Hübich Stone. That is how long his reign would last. It is said that the small rock, which can be walked on today, was once larger than the large one with the eagle. During the Thirty Years' War, however, imperial soldiers destroyed the top of the Great Hübichenstein with cannons, and since then the kind-hearted dwarf king Hübich has probably not been seen again. This legend still fascinates today and attracts visitors from near and far.
