The "Hohe Kleef", whose root word is derived from high cliff, is a rock formation in the Saxony-Anhalt part of the Harz Mountains, near Rübeland to be precise. The area is not only known for some famous stalactite caves - in this case the Baumannshöhle and Hermannshöhle - but also for a pleasant hiking trail that ends at the top of the Hoher Kleef with a viewing pavilion. This viewpoint was built a long time ago and has become a favourite destination for hikers in the Harz Mountains over the years.

Discover the Hoher Kleef viewing pavilion

The Hoher Kleef consists primarily of Devonian reef limestone and rises directly above the tranquil village of Rübeland. At a height of 442 metres above sea level, it is an impressive elevation that can be seen from afar when visiting the region. The hiking trail up to the top is only a short distance away from the famous Harz Witches' Trail and is therefore a popular destination for hikers in the area. The viewing pavilion at the top is a particular highlight. It was opened back in 1892 - proof that this place has been attracting visitors for many years. It is fitting that even Goethe is said to have once made the climb up to take in the view over the cave town of Rübeland.

Stamps for the hiking pin and proximity to the Hexenstieg trail

If you follow the Harz Hiking Need le, you will be able to collect stamp number 88 at the viewpoint. All the more reason why you should make your way to Saxony-Anhalt to see the limestone massif known as Hohe Kleef in person. The ascent itself is quite easy: there is a hiking trail from the Hermannshöhle car park that leads directly to the top. Experienced hikers would see the ascent as a small challenge - inexperienced hikers should therefore be prepared for a somewhat arduous climb. However, you will not only be rewarded with a stamp for your stamp card when you reach the top, but also with the historic pavilion. On a good day, you can look out over Rübeland and the valley from here and even catch a glimpse of the Brocken massif in the distance. So you can definitely take a break here, enjoy a snack and take in the view before heading back down.
