The Harz, Germany's northernmost low mountain range, is an ideal holiday destination, especially for nature lovers. If you like to spend time in the great outdoors, you will find a variety of worthwhile excursion destinations here. One of them is the Rabenklippe in the Harz Mountains, one of many cliffs and rock formations in the area. We tell you why the Rabenklippe is so special and how you can best get there.
The best way to reach the granite rock formation called Rabenklippe is from Bad Harzburg. There are various hiking trails of varying difficulty. The best place to start your hike is at the Haus der Natur. From here you can first reach the castle hill. If you are not so good on foot, you can also take the Burgberg cable car to the top. Once you have reached the top, the actual circular route begins. It leads you not only to the Rabenklippe, 555 metres above sea level, but also to numerous other sights. Worth mentioning and definitely worth a visit is the lynx enclosure. With a bit of luck, you can watch the lynx being fed here, but you can also get very close to the animals in other ways. The Cross of the German East and the Canossa Column are further attractions that you can discover during a circular hike to the Rabenklippe.
Once you have arrived at Rabenklippe, you not only have an impressive hike with many beautiful views behind you: the next highlight awaits you right here at the cliffs. In the Rabenklippen forest restaurant, where "fox and hare say good night to each other", you can fortify yourself for the way back. Typical Harz dishes await you, which you can enjoy on the panorama terrace in fine weather. By the way, you'll also find a Harzer Wandernadel stamp directly at the forest inn. If you don't know about this project yet, it's high time you did. There are 222 stamping points throughout the Harz. Many of them are at well-known sights, but others are at unknown places that are worth discovering. Once you have collected all 222 stamps, you will be crowned the Harz Hiking Emperor.
For the way back, we recommend the Kalte Tal, which leads directly back to Bad Harzburg. Here you will inevitably come across the Bad Harzburg treetop path, which we can also recommend. From here you have the unique opportunity to view the Harz forests from above.
The Rabenklippe is not the only cliff in the Harz. Nearby is the Taubenklippe. You can also collect a Harzer Wandernadel stamp at the Taubenklippe, which, by the way, is in the federal state of Saxony-Anhalt and not in Lower Saxony. A typical feature of the Harz mountains is the so-called wool-sack weathering. If you would like to discover more characteristic representatives of this natural phenomenon, we can recommend the Käste Cliffs near Bad Harzburg and the Otto Rock near Wernigerode.
