On an idyllic spot south of the town of Wernigerode in the Harz Mountains, the Kaiserturm Armeleuteberg tower majestically at 477.8 metres above sea level. If you want to test your fitness, you can climb the approximately twelve-metre-high tower via a stone spiral staircase and enjoy a breathtaking view from the top over the town and Wernigerode Castle as far as the countryside. Afterwards, you can fortify yourself in the adjacent forest inn for further explorations in the area. The inn also serves as a hiking destination and stamping point for the Harzer Wandernadel.

In the Middle Ages, St. George's Hospital for the Poor was founded on Armeleuteberg to provide care for the sick. This is where the name Armeleuteberg (Poor People's Hill) came from. The Kaiserturm (imperial tower) made of granite stone was finally built in 1902 as a tribute to Kaiser Wilhelm II. The robust building material was perfectly suited for the construction of defence towers or fortifications due to its sturdiness and durability.

High up: the Kaiserturm on the Harz hiking trail

No matter whether you set out in summer or winter - a trip to the Kaiserturm Armeleuteberg is worthwhile at any time of year. Start your tour from the Wernigerode West Gate and follow the Salzbergstraße to the summit. After 200 metres in altitude, a cosy restaurant awaits you, its culinary delights providing new energy. From here you can hike on to the Zillierbach dam or visit the small village of Drei Annen Hohne and take a look at the separation station of the Harzquerbahn and the Brockenbahn.

If you want to experience even more, you should definitely pay a visit to the picturesque village of Königshütte. Here, the impressive ruins of Königsburg Castle are enthroned high above and the nearby Königshütte Dam, with its beautiful surroundings, also invites you to explore. We also recommend the Rappbode Dam or the Mandelholz Dam, between the towns of Elend and Königshütte, both of which are definitely worth a detour.

The Hexenstieg is of course the absolute top trail in the Harz - nature lovers will get their money's worth here. Explore green mixed forests as well as rocky gorges and medieval half-timbered towns along the popular long-distance hiking trail. The thousand-year mining history has also left countless testimonies.

Whether you're in a village or a small town, nature abounds everywhere - unspoilt, peaceful and soothing. If your fitness allows, you can go on extensive explorations on foot from the Kaiserturm Armeleuteberg in the Harz Mountains or explore the beauty of nature and the region on numerous routes by bike. Discover picturesque places such as the cave village of Rübeland with its mysterious grottos and the magnificent crystal chamber in Hermann's Cave.

Wanderlust meets fairytale magic: The Wernigerode Fairytale Trail

The legendary Harz Mountains have always been known for their mystical stories and legends. The Wernigerode Fairytale Trail allows you to experience some of these exciting tales up close. Children in particular will be thrilled by the tricky riddles along the way.

As a specially designed hiking trail, the Wernigerode Fairytale Trail is ideal for families with children, not too long or difficult, but all the more interesting for that. At the end, the cosy Armeleuteberg forest inn awaits you - perfect for resting after an eventful day in the middle of the Harz forest.

The route, which is less than three kilometres long, leads through the unspoilt Harz Forest in a way that is as varied as it is captivating, and has both well-known and mysterious fairytale characters in store for you. Little Red Riding Hood or Rapunzel are just two of many companions on your journey along the trail. The starting point is the Hasseröder Holiday Park, the finish line is the Armeleuteberg inn, where the special Harzer Wandernadel stamp awaits the hiker as a reward.
