One of the most popular vantage points around the Trautenstein region is the Carlshaushöhe at an altitude of 626 metres, located south of the town and named after the old forester's lodge at the foot of the hill. The region attracts countless hikers year after year, particularly thanks to the famous Carlshaus Tower with its viewing platform and the unique panoramic view it offers. It is particularly worth mentioning that this is already the third tower at this location.

The history of the Carlshaus towers

The impressive view offered by the Carlshaus Tower was already important a long time ago, as evidenced by the fact that the first Carlshaus Tower was built here under the same name in the late 19th century. However, the almost 20 metre high wooden structure did not survive the autumn of 1898 and eventually collapsed. Just a few years later, in 1901, a new structure was built - the Bismarck Tower. The construction of the tower in honour of the chancellor was financed by the support of various associations. The tower soon became a popular excursion destination once again.

After the war, however, the GDR leadership was not very fond of the tower. On the one hand, you could see large parts of the western neighbours from here, on the other hand, the Soviet army had the area in mind as a restricted military zone, which ultimately led to the Bismarck Tower being blown up and the entire area being declared a restricted zone for civilians.

It was not until 1998, after the areas were returned to the local community, that the current Carlshaus Tower was finally erected. The steel structure is 50 metres high and provides radio support for Harz narrow-gauge railways. At a height of 30 metres there is a viewing platform, which has become a popular destination for hikers and holidaymakers in the area.

Ascent and view

Ideal starting points for a hike to the Carlshausturm are the villages of Trautenstein, Rotacker and Sophienhof, although the car park at the Radeweghaus on the B81 main road can also serve as a starting point. Hiking enthusiasts will find everything they need here thanks to the beautiful and rather remote landscape and the refuge and rest area located near the tower.

A total of 155 steps lead up to the viewing platform, but the climb is absolutely worth it in view of the unique view. The platform offers a maximum of around 20 people at a time a wonderful panoramic view of large parts of the Harz Mountains. Among other things, the Poppenberg, Hohnekamm, Brocken, Ramberg and Wurmberg can be recognised from here.
