The many castle ruins and legacies of fortresses and monasteries characterise the image of the Harz Mountains just as much as the special nature, which is a reason for many travellers to go on excursions. Over the centuries, there have been many noble families who have built their fortresses here to guard their borders. This is also the case with Trageburg Castle. The history of Trageburg Castle still harbours many secrets. After it was flooded by the construction of a reservoir, it fell into oblivion for quite some time and to this day, little information is known about the former fortress.
Flooded protective castle for trade through the Harz Mountains
The Trageburg castle in the Harz Mountains is said to have been built as early as the 13th century and not only overlooked a trade route in the early Middle Ages, but was also intended to protect the surrounding areas and some mining areas. After that, information becomes sparse, and had it not been for some archaeologists, the castle could have remained undiscovered to this day. This is mainly due to the construction of the Rappbode barrier. It flooded a large part of the former castle and today no really large remains of the walls have survived. Only the layout of the terrain gives an idea of the dimensions of the former fortress.
The fact that the area around Trageburg Castle is still one of the most popular excursion destinations in the Harz Mountains today is mainly due to its favourable location. The reason why it was probably once built here - namely the view of the valley below - is also the reason for the many hikers and day trippers who often settle here for a picnic. The cliff, which is around 40 metres above the current reservoir, offers an excellent view of the surrounding nature. Due to its geographical location, the remains of Trageburg Castle are still a favourite resting place for hikers who are drawn to this area of the Harz Mountains. Who knows - maybe one day you will find out more about the fate and role of the castle in the history of the Harz.
