We cordially invite you to a very special nature experience:

In the north of Thuringia, in the Kyffhäuser National GeoPark, lies the 15,000 m² Barbarossa Cave - one of the most extraordinary natural monuments in Europe. It is one of only two existing show caves in anhydrite rock in the world, making it an absolute geological rarity.

The Barbarossa Cave was discovered purely by chance in December 1865 by miners searching for copper slate and was opened to the public as a show cave just two weeks later.

On the 800 metre long exciting journey of discovery through Barbarossa's underground realm full of wonders and secrets, you can experience the history of the earth with all your senses and at the same time learn lots of interesting facts about Emperor Frederick I Barbarossa and the old legend surrounding him.

Geo adventure landscape

In addition to the unique natural wonder deep in the mountain, there is also a special attraction above ground that will make children's hearts beat faster: the geo adventure landscape. It offers the whole family a natural space to spend time together, have a picnic and relax.

For children, it is an extraordinary place to play and run around, but also to gain experience and learn. They can feel like real miners here, as there is a little mining town, lorries and mine passages. Lots of other play equipment encourages the children's thirst for adventure and discovery and guarantees imaginative play experiences.

In addition, the children are taught geological knowledge about the cave and the GeoPark at various stations (ravens).

GeoInformation Centre

An exciting journey into the history of the earth

The 833 km2 Kyffhäuser National GeoPark is extraordinarily rich in geological and archaeological features. You can discover and explore them at length in the newly built GeoInformation Centre.

However, visitors to the new exhibition are not given a dry and dry introduction to the diverse geoscientific interrelationships, but are introduced to them in a very entertaining way. It contains an interesting combination of multimedia and real objects. For example, you can travel through the geological eras using a touchscreen, but you can also find out interesting facts about various excavations in the archaeologists' tent using a telephone with a dial. In addition, seven rock columns show the types of rock found, their formation and use.

Children will also have fun - whether listening to radio plays in the legend corner, at the microscope, in the cave cinema or doing puzzles with large cubes.
